The R36S is one of the best budget retro handhelds on the market, capable of running thousands of classic games from PS1, SNES, GBA, NES, Sega, and more. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get started.

Step 1 – Charge Your R36S

Before first use, charge your R36S fully using the included USB-C cable. A full charge takes approximately 2–3 hours and gives you around 6–8 hours of playtime. The LED indicator turns off when fully charged.

Step 2 – Power On

Hold the Power button on the top-right of the device for 2–3 seconds. The R36S will boot into the ArkOS / RetroArch interface within a few seconds.

Step 3 – Navigate the Menu

Use the D-pad to browse game systems and the A button to select. Your games are organized by console (PS1, SNES, GBA, etc.). Simply scroll to your preferred system and pick a game.

Step 4 – In-Game Controls

  • Start / Select – Pause or access in-game menus
  • L1 + R1 + Start – Exit a game and return to the main menu
  • L2 + R2 + Select – Quick save state
  • L2 + R2 + Start – Load save state

Step 5 – Adjust Settings

Press Menu button during gameplay to access RetroArch settings. Here you can adjust:

  • Volume & brightness
  • Display scaling (integer scale for crisp pixels)
  • Controller mapping
  • Save & load states

Step 6 – Adding More Games

The R36S uses a microSD card for game storage. To add more games:

  1. Remove the microSD card from the slot on the back
  2. Insert it into your PC using a card reader
  3. Copy your ROM files into the correct system folder (e.g., /ROMS/PS1/)
  4. Reinsert the card and restart the R36S — games appear automatically

⚠️ Use a Class 10 / U3 microSD card for best performance.

Battery & Care Tips

  • Avoid letting the battery drain to 0% regularly
  • Store in a cool, dry place
  • Apply the included screen protector to avoid scratches
  • Use a case for travel protection
